St. Ignatius Mission

Visited the St. Ignatius Mission on the Flathead Indian reservation.  It was established in 1854 by Jesuit missionaries.  The inside of the church was beautiful.  They said we were welcome to take pictures.  Unfortunately the pictures can't begin to portray the beauty of the art work or the tranquility one felt while walking through and learning the history of this mission.  Only a few buildings remain from the original mission.  Of the buildings on the map below only the church on the right and two small cabins for the sisters and the Jesuit priests still stand.  What we found interesting about this mission was that the Native American people of the area sent a delegation to St. Louis in the 1840s to ask for missionaries to come to their area.  It took 4 trips before the church finally sent missionaries to the area.  The flathead tribe lost almost all of the delegates that they sent to illness and hostile attacks from the Sioux.  Anna and Elayna are standing next to what was the original stone mill.
