Oregon Coast Day 1

After the conference we took off for a few days down the Oregon coast.

Our first stop was L.L. "Stub" Stewart State park in Oregon.  It was a huge State park with multiple campgrounds, cabins, miles of hiking, biking and horse riding trails, a discovery center a playground and a day use picnic area.

The discovery center was small but packed with lots to explore.

Elk Jaw

Mountain Lion Skull

Turtle Skeleton.  This one was fascinating!

Bat skeleton and Lizard skeleton.

Bat skeleton up close.  This was moms favorite.  The wing bones were smaller than toothpicks.  Amazing!

Not what you want to see before you take off on your hike.

Centipede that squirted a powerful stinky smell on Kylie.

Four leaf clover found by Clara!

Train playground for the little girls to run off energy

This picture doesn't do this viewpoint justice.  It was a breathtaking view of a valley and we had the area almost to ourselves.

Christian Heritage Conference

April 27th and 28th we attended the annual Christian Heritage Conference.  We enjoyed encouraging speakers, an amazing vendor hall of resources for homeschoolers, fantastic fellowship with friends and a wonderful couple of days learning and growing together as a family.

We enjoyed staying at the Marriott and having a nice breakfast from the bistro each morning.

Special time with friends

After two full days of listening to speakers and going to workshop sessions a couple of us just couldn't stay awake through the final Keynote speaker.

If you homeschool and have never been to this conference you need to go next year!   You will leave feeling renewed and refreshed and ready to take on the challenges of another year teaching and disciplining your children.

A student is not above his teacher; but everyone, after he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher.  Luke 6:40

Do you know everyone who is teaching your children?  Do you know that they have a solid foundation in Christ Jesus?  Or are they huminists and evolutionists or ??

Poultry Palace

I have been saying I would get pictures of the poultry palace up.  I have not gotten a picture of the coop part yet but I decided to go ahead and post the pictures I have.

The kids worked so hard helping put this together.

The Poultry Palace:

  • Is 50x25 feet
  • Has an 8x8 coop with a perch and heat lamp
  • Has 4x4 treated posts buried 2 feet into the ground
  • Has galvanized steel cattle panel around the entire outside
  • Has 1 inch poultry netting covering the entire run and attached to the cattle panel every 2 inches
  • Has 1 inch chicken wire covering every inch of the cattle panel all the way around
  • Has 4x4 boards and landscaping boards around the entire base to prevent predators from burying under the cattle panel

It took hard work from almost everyone in the family.

Taking a break after lunch

Tying the chicken wire on was a tedious job that everyone helped with

Finished!

Ice Cream treats for a job well done.

President Obama, I made my kids work hard and help with my farm work.  I understand this makes me an outlaw now!  Come and get me!

Special week for Anna

Anna needed her own post tonight.  Last week was a big week for her!

First she learned to ride her bike all by herself.  She taught herself in the grass and surprised all of us.

A new rider deserves her very own new helmet.

In the same week she lost her very first tooth

Congrats Anna!  You are such a sweet, energetic young lady!  We are blessed to have you in our family!

Spring Babies

I have had several families ask me if our very sweet gentle cat was going to be a momma this year.  I said no because I figured if she was ever going to be a mom it would have happened last year.  But when Clara went to climb into her bed the other night she had a surprise waiting for her!

Rainy only had 4 and 2 of them are spoken for
so if you were one of those families can you remind me who you were?
If you still want a kitty they will be ready for their new families the first week of June.
Their birthday was April 3.

The other babies on Rainy Day Acres are getting bigger by the day.  The chicks are now outside during the day.  They like to search for worms in the grass and stretch their wings out in the sunshine.

Child Safe Cleaner

One of the worries when you have small children in the house is that they will get their hands on a household cleaner and ingest it or get it on their skin and become sick, or worse.  Even leftover residue from common every day cleaners can cause severe skin irritation to little ones   I was so excited to hear about this all natural cleaner that actually has a pleasant fragrance, unlike your basic homemade-vinegar baking soda mixes. Thanks Suzy S for the idea!

We took orange peels from 5 oranges we peeled for lunch.
We put them in a canning jar and poured white vinegar over them.

Then we left them to sit for about 10 days.

This draws out the orange oil.

Next we collected everything we would need.

Then we poured the liquid off the peels, straining it through cheesecloth and a strainer.

We squeezed all the liquid out of the peels and tossed them out.

Then we folded the cheesecloth into the bottom of the funnel
and strained the liquid through 3 more times to
filter out any remaining little orange bits.

Then we put it in a spray bottle.
I looked up similar recipes online and some call for diluting it with water.
We decided not to do that at this point.

For about 25 cents worth of vinegar we got 14 oz of cleaner.

Does it work?

I sent Anna (6) around the house with the spray bottle testing it on different surfaces.
She was using a warm, damp rag.

Our review:
  • It cleaned the surfaces and did not leave a sticky residue
  • It had a pleasant smell.  More orange than vinegar and the smell dissipated quickly.
  • It did not leave streaks or smudges.
  • It was very cost effective for the type of cleaning we needed it to do

Our conclusion-

Because it is a mild disinfectant we recommend it for high chairs, counter tops, daily bathroom wipe downs, window sills, door knobs, light switches and other places that are wiped down often but not necessarily needing harsh disinfecting.  Highly recommended for little ones who are learning to clean.  No harsh fumes, no hazard if it gets on their skin or clothes.  And no need to worry about not rinsing it off properly and making someone sick or damaging clothing.  However, we would not recommend it for deeper weekly type bathroom cleaning or for cleaning counters where there has been raw meat. It will not replace bleach if you need to kill hard strains of bacteria like E-Coli. Also maybe not for homes with people who need perfect sanitizing due to lowered immune systems.

The chemicals in citrus have a corrosive property on certain surfaces so test it in a small area until you know for sure what surfaces you want to use it on.
